Although he occasionally painted portraits and landscapes, Meurer specialized in trompe l'oeil (in English, deceive the eye) still life throughout his long career. Here, various objects lie scattered beneath a piece of broken glass, within a painted frame. Legible on the envelope above the carefully rendered dollar bill are the artist's name and address in Paris where he studied at the famed Académie Julian. While seemingly a random selection, the full significance accorded these items by the artist and their association with one another remains unknown.
