Storage Jar

1100-1399

Physical Qualities Fritware with cobalt blue glaze , 15.5 x 11.3 cm. (6 1/8 x 4 7/16 in.)
Credit Line The Cone Collection, formed by Dr. Claribel Cone and Miss Etta Cone of Baltimore, Maryland
Object Number 1950.2010.9
This storage jar is associated with spices and— at least in Europe—pharmaceutical substances. It is difficult, however to determine its origin and date. The type was produced in 12th-13th century Syria and 14th-century Iran though its shape suggests the earlier date.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by bequest, 1949; Etta Cone, Baltimore; Claribel or Etta Cone, Baltimore; probably purchased in Egypt in 1906 or Turkey in 1906 or 1907 on Cone Family trip
