After completing the “almost photographic” initial study, Matisse executed a series of rapid pencil sketches on bound notepads. In these fluid, spontaneous drawings, he let his hand “go to work,” exploring the presentation of the sitter in various poses and compositional formats in a manner that he would later refer to as “unconscious drawing,” where his attention was focused squarely on the model and not the paper itself.
