While traveling to Egypt in 1895, Clairin stopped in Venice and
painted this small, colorful study of the eleventh-century Basilica
of San Marco, the city’s most glorious architectural monument.
Here, he shows the elaborate mosaic façade of the building and
a portion of a column that stands in the main piazza against
the brilliant blue sky.
