While traveling to Egypt in 1895, Clairin stopped in Venice and painted this small, colorful study of the eleventh-century Basilica of San Marco, the city’s most glorious architectural monument. Here, he shows the elaborate mosaic façade of the building and a portion of a column that stands in the main piazza against the brilliant blue sky.
