Diary references indicate that Lucas had regular contact with
Loustaunau during the 1870s and early 1880s, perhaps in connection
with commissions for Americans William Henry Vanderbilt and
William Corcoran, among others. Although known primarily for his
genre scenes and landscapes, the artist presents here a somewhat
haunting view of the chateau at Fontainebleau near Paris, possibly
the Oval Court with its pilasters and arcades.
