Both a painter and a lithographer, Fantin-Latour is best known for the luxurious floral still lifes of his mature period as well as realistic portraits that often included the leading avant-garde artists and writers of his day. In the early 1870s, he introduced into his oeuvre a new genre of highly imaginative works that were inspired by romantic literary and musical sources, notably Johannes Brahms, Hector Berlioz, and Richard Wagner. Lucas also owned a small still life by the artist as well as his palette. In addition, he formed a collection of lithographs, several of which are inscribed to the collector. On September 1, 1904, he noted in his Diary that he had attended Fantin’s funeral at the church of St. Germain-des-Prés in Paris.
