Rectangular sampler with long prayer or poem worked in within a center cartouche. Within wide borders surrounding this are embroidered floral designs including red carnations, white, blue, flowers, bell shaped flowers like lily of the valley, etc. on long stems with long round tip leaves with serrated edges. Embroidered in light threads outer border: [Alphabet in all caps] "A-Z" [with "J" and "U"] Embroidered in light threads outer border on left side: "VIRTUE'S THE CHIEFEST BEAUTY OF THE MIND" [and right side:] "THE NOBLEST ORNAMENT OF HUMAN KIND" Embroidered at the bottom, [Alphabet in lower case] "a-z" [no "j"] Embroidered in black threads within cartouche: "Teach me to feel another's woe To hide the fault I see, That mercy I to others show, That mercy show to me This day be bread and peace, my lot All else beneath the sun Thou know'st if best bestow'd or not And let thy will be done/ ELIZABETH TAPP April 8th 1833 Colcombe School"
