The Artist’s Studio

1864-1869

Physical Qualities Oil on wood panel, 16 x 13 in. (40.6 x 33 cm.)
Credit Line The Cone Collection, formed by Dr. Claribel Cone and Miss Etta Cone of Baltimore, Maryland
Object Number 1950.200
Between 1865 and 1870, Corot painted six works bearing this title. The Baltimore example is now thought to be an ébauche, or preliminary study, for a larger version in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. It is painted in looser and more fluid brushstrokes than the Washington picture. These paintings have been frequently likened to those of the 17th-century Delft master Jan Vermeer in the subtle treatment of the effects of light and in their poetic representation of ordinary life.
