After 1900, Edouard Vuillard preferred to create his paintings with distemper, a water-based medium that dried quickly and left a matte, opaque surface. Because of the quick drying time, he could apply layer upon layer of paint in some areas, and less in others, producing a dense and delicate effect. He took great care to depict the many subtle patterns of this room by presenting the wallpaper, coverlet, and curtains in careful detail. This intimate interior depicts Vuillard’s mother in her bedroom at their summer home in Vaucresson. She has just removed her widow’s cap, and he captures her with grace and dignity in a still and contemplative moment.
