The Caribou Hunter depicts a hunter in a moment of triumph—bursting with pride, he presents the caribou he has successfully killed for all to see. The hunter wears a traditional parka and wood-carved iggaak (goggles) used to prevent snow blindness. This work exemplifies Judas Ullulaq’s trademark expressionistic, wryly humorous style—the figure strikes an exaggerated pose and appears with wide eyes, his mouth agape, and distorted facial features.
Ullulaq was a prominent Inuit artist who lived a nomadic lifestyle for many years and survived on the land through hunting and fishing. That experience informed his artistic practice, as much of his work speaks to Arctic wildlife, Inuit storytelling, and the relationship between the hunter and hunted.
