A prolific sculptor who worked mainly in bronze, Reuben Kramer was a life-long resident of Baltimore. Following study at the Rinehart School of Sculpture of the Maryland Institute College of Art, he was awarded the coveted Prix de Rome and lived in Italy from 1934 to 1936. The recipient of numerous prizes throughout his long career, he exhibited frequently in New York, Washington, DC and at The Baltimore Museum of Art where several one-man shows explored various aspects of his work. Kramer’s sculpture reveals an intimate understanding of the art of such masters as Rodin and Bourdelle, Lipchitz and Matisse. For the most part, his bronzes represent human figures in decorous poses. Anatomical features are generalized and identities seldom disclosed, such anonymity imbuing them with greater universal meaning. Although generally modest in scale, Kramer’s sculptures achieve monumentality through their simplified forms and the candor of the artist’s unique vision.
