The brushwork and subject matter of this very early work was influenced by the Impressionists, although the somber palette may be a reflection of the artist's northern artistic roots. In 1896, his friend and fellow art student Henri Evenepoel wrote about a group of Seine riverscapes that he and Matisse painted together in the early morning: "The Seine is marvelous at that hour: a milky landscape, sky brimming with light, gilded, pink- and blue-tinted at the same time, the quays deserted! From 7:30 we work until ten because at that hour the atmosphere changes, the enveloping mist clears: the sun beats straight down to grill us: we have to give way to it!"
