Alberto Savinio’s writing recounts his induction into the Italian army and his travel by boat and train to the Mediterranean coast during World War I, all the while grappling—through dreams, humor, and nostalgia—with the contrast between the tedium of daily military life and heroism. (Savinio’s war-time diary also references the Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts, in which Jason is assisted by the gods as he travels with his crew on an arduous journey to claim the magical golden fleece to regain his throne.) Francesco Clemente’s lush and expressive lithographs act as a thoughtful counterpart to and evocation of Savinio’s surreal story, as demonstrated here by the rendering of soldiers as strings of paper dolls layered over the text in two colors. The viewing, comprehension, and appreciation of each spread—often requiring one to search across and through, if not under and around Clemente’s imagery—takes the reader on a literal and metaphysical journey, as does the process of physically engaging with such a large book.
