Pierre-Charles Baquoy’s detailed image reveals much about the traditional printmaking process, including the important role played by sculpture. In the left foreground, a young apprentice studies the bust of a male figure, preparing to translate its threedimensional form onto paper. Scattered throughout the studio are other models and casts, including a reproduction of the Farnese Hercules on a shelf to the far left. This sculpture inspired countless variations and copies—including two works on view nearby.
