The rectangular works from a series of forty-eight engravings illustrate various market scenes with fish and fowl for sale. Depictions of visual abundance and daily life, including market and harvest scenes, became popular subject matter in European art of the 16th and 17th centuries. Collectors preferred these visual representations of abundance and prosperity because they offered highly detailed depictions of everyday life. In this gallery, a painting by Louise Moillon offers a view of a French market stall.
