Arranged in poses that suggest boredom, isolation, contemplation, or despair, a group of men is seated on the floor in what resembles an audience or a prayerlike setting. Some have bulbous noses, some wear traditional shalwar khameez (South Asian pants and tunic) and others wear imaginative turbans and hats. These men refer allegorically to South Asian or Middle Eastern father figures, sons, and tribal elders. The composition can be read as a rumination or poem on masculinity and the artist’s own “femme queerness.”
Toor’s lively use of color and placement of sinuous, creeping shadows also contribute to the narrative. The striking green palette heightens the sense of mystery, and touches of coral on the ears, lips, noses, and fingers hint at intimate or hidden connections between the figures.
