This etching was an important step in the development of the composition for Manet's later painting, "The Gypsies" (1862), now destroyed. It represents a moment in Manet's early printmaking career before he fully realized the graphic potential of the medium. The scribbled and quickly drawn lines of drypoint and etching needle create a spontaneity of sketch that is missing from his later, more carefully rendered etchings.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by purchase, 2007; Paul McCarron, NY; (sale, Christie's NY, 7 Feb 2008, lot 16); Alfred Beurdeley (Lugt 421)
