A native of New York, Dannat traveled abroad at an early age,
enrolling in the Royal Academy in Munich before settling
permanently in Paris in 1880 where he studied with Carolus-
Duran and the Hungarian genre and portrait painter, Mihály von
Munkácsy. Elegant women, often shown in interior settings, as
well as portraiture were his favorite subjects. Here, a young
matron admires her reflection as she dons a stylish hat.
