Although born in Boston, Alice Worthington Ball spent much of her professional life in Baltimore. A pupil first of American Impressionists, Edmund Tarbell (1862 – 1938) and Frank Weston Benson (1862 – 1951) at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, she completed her artistic education in Paris. Known primarily as a landscapist, she also painted still lifes and genre subjects, all of her works striking in their vibrant, rich use of color. Throughout her career, Ball was a frequent exhibitor at the National Academy of Design in New York and at Baltimore’s Charcoal Club. Generally returning to Massachusetts during the summer months, she also exhibited at various Boston galleries.
