This print reproduces a work by Michelangelo. Cherubino Alberti’s engraving after the marble Deposition of c. 1550, on the other hand, uses an invented setting to emphasize the narrative content of Michelangelo’s work. By situating the sculpture between the place of Christ’s crucifixion (on a hill in the distance) and his burial (in a cave to the right), Alberti activates it as part of an unfolding sequence of events. Although the printing process reverses the sculpture's orientation, Alberti remains true to his model by reminding viewers that it was carved from marble. We see the stony base on which the figures rest, and sense Christ’s physical weight as he is carefully lowered to the ground.
