This image by Frilley, a noted engraver and draftsman who exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1824 to 1850, is based on a painting in the Musée du Louvre by the Italian Renaissance master Raphael. The time-honored theme of the Virgin Mary holding a book and the infant Jesus on her lap may have influenced Tanner’s conception of Christ Learning to Read.
T. Harrison Garrett, Baltimore, purchased 1885 (Lugt supp. 2435b); James L. Claghorn, Philadelphia (lugt supp. 555c).
