From a distance, "The XXXV" looks simple enough: three red shapes elegantly positioned on off-white paper. Upon closer inspection, subtle details become evident. These serve as clues to how Roni Horn made her drawing and reveal that the composition is not as straightforward as it might first appear. The many deliberations of the artist’s hand are visible in stray smudges of pigment, pin pricks, and pencil marks along the seams of joined pieces of paper.
Horn “draws” by applying dense layers of pigment and varnish to areas of a single sheet of paper. She cuts the resulting image into fragments and reassembles them into various configurations. The artist then pins these different arrangements on a wall in her studio,
at times re-cutting the paper, until she feels that she has arrived at a final, harmonious alignment. Ultimately, Horn emphasizes the process of discovery in both creating and looking. She states, “Questions gather around moments of doubt—that’s how you enter the work.”.
