This intimate portrait of an Apsáalooke man was once a part of a group photograph with multiple other Apsáalooke men. Originally titled Young Brave, this was one of over 60 images mass-produced by Laton Alton Huffman, who capitalized on a romanticized story about the Apsáalooke sitter. Huffman invented a tale that this individual was a groom and passed this photograph off as his own, though he in fact appropriated and cropped an image originally taken by Christian Barthelmess (1854–1906). Both men supplemented their incomes by selling stereotypical images of life in the American West at the turn of
the 19th century. Due to the passage of time and layers of falsehoods, scholars remain unable to identify this sitter or explain why he and this group of men posed for their studio portrait.
