Stock still, clad in a rose-bedecked hat and matching jacket, a circus performer confronts viewers with a stare so frank that one might imagine actor and audience have changed places. He is one of many clowns and acrobats who modeled for Walt Kuhn in full costume and makeup. As a producer of theatrical events and variety shows, Kuhn gained insight into the precarious existence of performers, a subject of interest to artists as far back as Watteau in the early 18th century, carried on by early modernists including Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, and Pablo Picasso. Passionate about modern art, and determined to show how modernism was rooted in the works of the Old Masters, Kuhn co-organized the comprehensive Armory Show of 1913, which introduced European modernist painting and sculpture to mesmerized (and often scandalized) Americans.
