Susan Howe’s background as a visual artist is evident in the design of her poetry, in which collages of text become images. Howe created the 67 poems for "Tom Tit Tot" by extracting excerpts from various sources including art criticism, philosophy, and folklore. After cutting out fragments of letters, words, and sentences, she created collages, constructing new texts with novel meanings and various possibilities for reading and recitation, all the while retaining the typefaces, spacing, and rhythms of the originals.
