Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Ruscha’s first book, consists of straightforward photographs of 26 different gasoline stations and short captions that indicate their respective locations and names. Ruscha took most of these photos along Route 66 while driving from Los Angeles, where he still lives and works, to his hometown of Oklahoma City to visit his family. The sequence of gasoline stations in the book are printed in almost the exact same order as they appear on Route 66, from west to east.
