André Derain’s woodcuts feature stylized figures, compressed spaces, and bold contrasts of tone, similar to his paintings of this period. Much like the woodcuts of Paul Gauguin (1848–1903), which were influential to the Fauves, this simplified scene of two
nudes in a landscape is inked lightly and irregularly. Derain’s early woodcuts were very experimental. The artist carved and printed them himself in small quantities, as he considered the activity to be a private one during this period of his career.
