Garry Winogrand is widely recognized for documenting the American social landscape of the 1960s and 1970s through his street photography. This selection of images is drawn from his photographic book Women are Beautiful, 1975. Using close viewpoints and croppings, Winogrand sought to reveal aspects of his subjects’ sense of self through pictures that have the look of a snapshot. At the same time, his approach exposes the voyeuristic and invasive aspects of photographing a person who is unaware of the camera’s presence, qualities potentially heightened when the photographer is male and the subject is female. Winogrand acknowledged the role of the camera and his own vision in coloring the way we experience his subjects, explaining: “Whenever I’ve seen an attractive woman, I’ve done my best to photograph her. I don’t know if all the women in the photographs are beautiful, but I do know that the women are beautiful in the photographs.”
