In discussing her work, Tomma Abts has said, “Everything I do is unplanned. I never know the image beforehand.” The artist approaches a new drawing by first establishing a set of parameters for the work: it will have stripes, circles, dots, or a combination of these and other shapes. In "Untitled (#24)", Abts has drawn circles freehand, a feat of precision achieved without the use of a stencil, protractor, compass, or other tool. In a step-by-step process that she employs for her paintings as well, Abts makes a mark, evaluates, and then makes another mark based on the previous one. In this way, she creates compositions of methodical spontaneity, achieved through the process of their own making and the remarkable skill of the artist.
