Richard Artschwager’s art defies categorization and frequently leaves viewers with more questions than answers. In this drawing, charcoal smudges skip across the surface of textured paper, lending to the spatial ambiguity and confounding perspective. Though the artist never revealed the subject of this work, it may be the nighttime desert near his childhood home in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a subject he has returned to with some frequency.
