Strokes of nearly transparent ink wash lend an eerie, dreamlike atmosphere to this drawing of individuals working and playing in a barren landscape. In the foreground, children and adults do chores—hanging laundry, tilling soil, and playing with chickens—that evoke Kanemitsu’s early life in rural Japan. In the middle ground, young children with a fishing pole play in a discarded cardboard box. At the center of the composition, an artist sits with a wine bottle and paint brushes in hand. This peculiar blend of imagery offers an inventory of the contents of the artist’s memory that fed his imagination.
