Stephen Shore, like William Eggleston, is a pioneer of color photography; he was one of the first photographers to work exclusively in color. Holden Street, North Adams, Massachusetts is one of 49 photographs included in Shore’s groundbreaking book Uncommon Places, published by Aperture in 1982. Its title notwithstanding, Shore’s views of architecture, interiors, and landscapes look somewhat familiar, but the scenes have undergone something of a metamorphosis through the artist’s sensitivity to color and composition. In his own words: “I would be in a flat nowhere place of earth, and every now and then I would walk outside or be driving down a road and the light would hit something and for a few minutes the place would be transformed.”
