Inspired by off-grid life at The Land, a self-sustaining experimental residency and communal site, Rirkrit Tiravanija created this functional bicycle shower to address a basic human need. To use this artwork, one communalist would power the pump through bicycling in order to contribute to the comfort and wellbeing of another. The sculpture provokes us into reconsidering the value of the objects and experiences of everyday life, particularly those that promote a stronger sense of community and greater sustainability.
The artist often invites friends and strangers alike to participate in his artworks as shared experiences. In 1998, Tiravanija initiated The Land, which continues today outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Rather than determining the site by traditional notions of property ownership, these grounds and their inhabitants produce food for families in the neighboring village as well as the participants who use it as an open space for artistic, engineering, and environmental innovation.
