Untitled (Billboard and Flag) and Untitled (Eagle) are part of Nathan Lyons’s sequence of images After 9/11. The work is an investigation of the display of the American flag and flag imagery throughout the United States following September 11, 2001. Lyons’s photographs reveal the ubiquity and variety of interpretations of the flag that appeared after that day’s terrorist attacks. The images include profoundly personal presentations, as well as commercial displays of the symbol. The breadth of Lyons’s documentation reveals the complex range of attitudes and motivations (pride, grief, aggression,
naïveté, sincerity, opportunism) behind the ostensibly patriotic gestures that originated with the country’s shared sense
of shock and tragedy.
