William Eggleston’s Graceland series reflects on the “King of Rock and Roll,” Elvis Presley (1935–1977), through exterior and interior shots of his now legendary home, Graceland. The project began in 1983, when Eggleston received a commission to take the photographs. The images were first used for a souvenir guidebook and later appeared in a photo spread in House and Garden magazine, bringing the splendors and oddities of Graceland to a wider audience. Eggleston remained on the property at night after the public was gone and experimented with long exposures to shoot the dark spaces. As a result, he was able to depict Graceland’s excessive decor in sharp detail, portraying the mansion entombed in its eccentric luxury and rich colors.
