Topped with stylized poppies, the undulant organic form of this vase seems to grow right out of the ground, leaving no doubt about its adherence to modernist principles of nature-based Art Nouveau design. But Royal Doulton’s rich red flambé glaze is a reprise of China’s sang de boeuf (oxblood) glazes of the 17th century and thereafter. The English vase has been embellished with American sterling at both lip and base, just as in earlier times fragile Asian porcelains were set into precious metal mounts once they reached Europe.
