New England glasshouses were highly competitive, and it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between their products, particularly those that are unmarked. This large vase, a tour de force of mold-blown glass, could either be "Amberina," made by the New England Glass Works, or "Rose Amber," made by the Mount Washington Glass Company. English-born glass master Frederick S. Shirley, who was active at Mount Washington, is thought to have produced "Amber Glass" before the New England Glass Works imitated it with "Amberina."
