Chinese technical innovations from the mid-17th to mid-18th century included
a new, egg-shaped kiln design in which different temperatures and kiln
atmospheres could be maintained in a single firing. An increased percentage of
kaolin clay in the body led to the smoother, whiter surface of this vase. Cobalt ore from Yunnan Province and improved methods of refining the mineral pigment produced the clear, bright blue of its decoration.
