Print is based on Chassériau's painting, Vénus marine, 1838 (Sandoz 44). This impression is prior to the first state listed by Fisher; it includes the decorative frame and yellow tint stone, and author, title, and printer inscriptions, but lacks the publication inscription. See 1979.200 for an impression of the second state.
