Many pottery traditions of Puebloan communities declined between 1850 and 1880. After 1880 they experienced a renaissance fueled by the interest of collectors. In contrast, Acoma pottery production was not disrupted in the 19th century, although forms and designs changed. Water jars are an example of a vessel form that was both functional to Puebloan people and popular with late 19th century collectors. They predominate in the repertoire of early twentieth-century Acoma potters.
