The inscription “Voania/Muba” on this sculpture’s spherical base clearly identifies its maker. Known for his skill in creating lifelike figures, the artist Voania was chief of the small town Muba in what was then the colonized Belgian Congo. Situated near the Atlantic Ocean coast, the region has a long history of trade and exchange with Europe. Voania’s descendants recall that he created works exclusively for European and American customers. By combining local Congolese fashions, like the wrapper skirt and backless seat, with European clothing styles worn by colonizers, such as the military-style helmet and tailored jacket, Voania created his artworks to appeal to his buyers’ tastes.
