View of Eygalières

1926-1936

Physical Qualities Oil on canvas, 21 5/16 × 25 5/8 in. (54.1 × 65.1 cm.)
Credit Line The Cone Collection, formed by Dr. Claribel Cone and Miss Etta Cone of Baltimore, Maryland
Object Number 1950.210
Although Matisse was over thirty when he met eighteen-year-old Derain in art school, the two artists immediately admired each other and began to work together to push the limits of using color in their paintings. The Cone sisters did not acquire any of Derain's Fauve works, but they did purchase several later canvases that range from landscape to figure painting. In this tranquil composition from the early 1930s, Derain has contrasted the earth tones of the ground and leaves that are just starting to turn brown with the vibrant, blue sky.
