This panoramic cityscape, painted from Norbert Goeneutte’s studio on the rue de Rome, shows the Pont de l’Europe and the Gare Saint-Lazare with Paris in the distance. The large building on the horizon is Charles Garnier’s Opera House, which opened in 1875.
Billowing clouds of steam, rising from train engines, recall Claude Monet’s treatment of the same subject in his compositions from the late 1870s. Like the Impressionists, Goeneutte specialized in views of modern Paris, recording the everyday lives of both working class and affluent Parisians.
