Wall Quilt

1979-1989

Physical Qualities Cotton or blended cotton/polyester and synthetic fabrics, polyester batting, wool and/or synthetic embroidery yarns, synthetic sequins and metallic trims, 34 x 28 1/2 in. (86.4 x 72.4 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Martha Macks-Kahn, Goya-Girl Press, Baltimore
Object Number 2011.347
A small rectangular wall quilt composed of a black and white printed ground fabric (plain-woven) ornamented with appliquéd and embroidered designs and sequin trims. The ground displays lacy black buta motifs on a white background with narrow strips of red sequined fabric (cut from a fabric rather than applied individually and heat bonded or glued to a base rather than sewn or strung) sewn in random fashion throughout the top - sometimes outlining (but not fully) the black motifs. In the center of the quilt is an appliquéd stem-like form in silky violet metallic fabric. This form is outlined with a trim consisting of silver sequins and metallic threads. At the end of this violet "stem" are appliquéd "petals" of solid dark red, solid black with silver piping, and multicolored printed fabrics - all trimmed in sequins. Additional appliqués formed of multicolored printed fabrics (light blue ground with pink, green, yellow, orange, and purple flowers; other prints in orange, green, blue, white, pink, red, etc.) form abstract creatures in each corner. These are outlined and ornamented in corded green yarn (wool or synthetic) and multiple colored sequins (red, green, silver, blue, gold). The two creature-like forms at the lower corners have multicolored and pearl-colored sequins. The quilt batting is polyester throughout, with appliquéd motifs highly stuffed to give a three dimensional effect. The uneven edges of the quilt are bound with a metallic silver piping. The quilt is lined with a blue knit fabric. Five safety pins are placed along the top reverse edge, presumably for hanging.
