Baltimore artist Thomas Cromwell Corner painted this image of his father, William Henly Corner (1839 – 1911), in a profile pose that recalls a well-known painting by expatriate American artist James McNeill Whistler. Whistler’s Arrangement in Grey and Black (1871, Louvre, Paris), more popularly known as “Whistler’s Mother,” was widely imitated by young American painters. The painting retains its original frame, derived from reeded moldings made famous by Whistler.
The artist to his sister, Helen Corner, Baltimore; to her sister, Camilla Corner, Baltimore; to her cousin, George W. Corner, Philadelphia
