Wine Cooler

1845-1860

Physical Qualities Silver, 13 x 8 3/8 x 7 1/4 in. (33 x 21.3 x 18.4 cm)
Credit Line Purchased as the gift of the Friends of the American Wing, in Honor of M.B. Munford, Associate Curator Emerita of Decorative Arts, 1963-1997
Object Number 1997.197.1
Graceful swags of foliage suspended by ribbons are engraved into the surface of this stately wine cooler, enhancing its gentle curves. The person to whom the initials J.M.W. refer has not been identified, reminding us that personal histories found on silver are fragile and can be easily obscured without attendant documentation.
