Wine Cup Decorated with Domestic Scene

1667-1699

Physical Qualities Porcelain with overglaze enamel decoration, 4 1/8 H x 3 1/8 Diam. in. (10.5 x 8 cm.)
Credit Line The Cone Collection, formed by Dr. Claribel Cone and Miss Etta Cone of Baltimore, Maryland
Object Number 1950.1985.1
Double firing made it possible to decorate high-firing porcelains with colorful enamels that could not survive great heat. A plain cup was first fired at a high temperature. The figural scene was then painted in enamel on top of the once-fired surface. The decorated cup was then fired a second time at a lower temperature.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by bequest, 1949; Etta Cone, Baltimore; Claribel or Etta Cone; probably purchased in China or Japan in 1907 on Cone Family trip
Asian Reinstallation: Home, Temple, Tomb
