Occassionally, a masterful object becomes available which is irresistable because of its great rarity, aesthetic quality, and documentation. Such was the case with this extraordinary blue glass wine fountain. The only other one known to have survived the vicissitudes of the table and care of servants is in The Corning Museum of Glass. Clearly made to be placed directly on a dining or banqueting table, the base is fitted with small leather-covered casters, presumably so it might be rolled from one guest to another. The enchanting ormolu figure of Bacchus atop the barrel can be removed for refilling the barrel with spirits. The production of this unusual form is documented in the engraved tradecard (reproduced here) of London glass manufacturer, Colebron Hancock (c. 1770-1780).
