Wolf with Deer Carcass

1869

Physical Qualities Bronze, black patina, 9-11/16 H x 15-1/2 L x 4-3/16 D in.
Credit Line Gift of Mr. and Mrs. E. Bruce Baetjer
Object Number 1974.25.3
Striding wolf with proper right foreleg and proper right hind leg forward. The wolf's head is erect, but leaning forward; its mouth open, and fangs clearly visible; its ears erect; its bushy tail straight out. Lying on the ground between the wolf's front legs is the carcass of a small deer. Base: oval ground with carcass of a small deer; no rim. The carcass of the small deer is between the wolf's front legs, but in the photographs in Poletti & Richarme (2000) and Pivar it is between the wolf's hind legs. However, there is nothing to indicate that this reversal of the base was done after the sculpture was cast and finished - it appears to have been cast intentionally with the base reversed.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by gift, 1974; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Norman Baetjer, Jr., Baltimore, by bequest; either in 1969, from Harry Norman Baetjer, Baltimore or in 1945, from his uncle, Edwin G. Baetjer, Baltimore; Edwin G. Baetjer, Baltimore, by bequest 1923; Charles Koppleman, Baltimore

Inscribed: Bottom of base, red paint: L.72.10.10; BMA acc. #74.25.3. Signed on side of base: BARYE.
