Known primarily as a painter of historical subjects, Thomas Couture also excelled in portraiture. A romantic who broke from the prevailing academic tradition, he became a popular teacher in Paris during the 1850s and 1850s, and counted among his pupils Édouard Manet and Mary Cassatt. In this evocative image, a young woman, her figure bathed in strong light, turns her head away from the viewer in a gesture of modesty.
